The 13th annual Judi Garman Classic opened on Thursday morning at Cal State Fullerton with the No. 25 Michigan Wolverines and Loyola Marymount Lions.

LMU 2 Michigan 3
LMU opened the scoring with a two-run home run from Molly Grumbo in the top of the second inning but it wasn’t enough as the Lions fell 3-2.

Michigan’s Natalia Rodriguez attempts to move a runner before singling through the left side.

Hannah Bandimere kept the Michigan offense off balance as she scattered eight hits across seven innings. The Wolverines scored one in the third, one in the fifth and one in the seventh.  Tera Blanco roped a double to the gap in right center to walk Michigan off.  Meghan Beaubien got the win in the circle. She gave up two runs on four hits and struck out six.

Charlotte 0 Michigan 5
Tera Blanco and Sarah Schaefer combined for a five-hit shutout against the Charlotte 49ers.

Faith Canfield paced UM at the plate going 4-for-4 in the lead off spot with two runs batted in. Lou Allan collected a couple of RBIs of her own with a pinch-hit single to left center in the bottom of the fourth.

Comments from Michigan Head Coach Carol Hutchins
On coming away with two wins on Thursday…

“We just have to fight through it. I think our offense is just really tight right now. Our swings are tight and we just have keep fighting through it. I thought we were resilient because we aren’t scoring a lot of runs and we aren’t hitting extremely well right now.”

Thoughts about why the offense is struggling…

“They are just kids. I think some kids expectations need to change and just be about expecting to work hard every single day and not making it more than it is. I think they make too much of what it is sometimes.”

What to look forward to the rest of the weekend…

“I just want to see us get better. I’d like to see us swing a little freer. I’d like to see us get our bunts down when we need them. Period. That’s the name of our game.”
