The weather was beautiful and the games were competitive on the first day of Session 2 of the Puerto Vallarta College Challenge.

Ole Miss bats heat up
Despite losing lead off hitter Elantra Cox to an undisclosed injury, Kylan Becker stepped into the lead off spot and delivered for the Rebels in an 8-2 win over Texas.  Becker, who was 1-for-13 prior to Thursday night’s contest, went 2-for-2 with two walks, two runs scored and one RBI.

Head coach Mike Smith had to juggle his lineup with Cox missing and freshman Ally Mena started a shortstop and was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Autumn Gillespie added two RBIs of her own when she went 3-for-4 with two doubles in the contest.

Kaitlin Lee earned the win pitching four shutout innings. Morgan Bruce surrendered one run on one hit and Elisha Jahnke made her season debut allowing one run on two hits.

Houston hangs with Oregon
Third-ranked Oregon entered the weekend averaging more than 12 runs per game. Then, they ran into the Houston Cougars in a 1-0 ballgame. Presley Bell and Savannah Heebner battled Megan Kleist in a pitchers duel for seven innings. Kleist came out on top with a 10-strikeout, one-hit performance, but Bell and Heebner kept the Ducks’ offense in check, allowing the only run of the game in the first inning.

Gwen Svekis collected her team leading 13th RBI of the season when she singled in Shannon Rhodes.

Von Spreckin homers, pitches Texas to victory
Paige von Spreckin pitched a complete-game shutout against Rutgers on Thursday. The senior also hit a solo home run in the second inning for what would be the game-winning run. Taylor Ellsworth doubled the score when she reached third on a dropped ball error in the fourth inning and scored on an RBI single from MK Tedder.
